The family’ s story starts 40 years ago, crayfishing on the Coast of Kaikoura. From humble beginnings as a small local shop selling crayfish, the family has now diversified with the supply of crayfish, both domestically and internationally, farming along the Kaikoura Coast, breeding both cattle and polo ponies, operating a seafood restaurant and more recently with the purchase of Karaka Estate Vineyard.

Two generations later all siblings and their growing families are actively involved in the family business. One thing has remained the same throughout the years – the family’s love of premium produce and their reputation for fresh seafood.

In 2024, the vision for Karaka Estate Wines was born, with a simple but heartfelt problem—finding wines that perfectly paired with the fresh seafood served at our seaside café – Karaka Lobster.

As of 2026, Karaka Estate Wines is actively pursuing further domestic and international markets. Becoming the Urban Polo wine sponsor has been a significant marketing milestone, reinforcing the natural connection between our wine, polo, and coastal lifestyle.
